Obama Reaches Out to Women in Albuquerque

Also see my write-up at the New Mexico Independent and crossposted at New Mexico FBIHOP.

Barack Obama visited the Flying Star on Broadway in Albuquerque today to speak to working women.  I was lucky enough to get a press credential be allowed to cover the event.

And I got some really good pictures of the event.  Click on any of the pictures to get a larger-sized image.

Obama is a powerful speaker, and he clearly cares about women's issues.  He has two daughters and told the group of about 30 women that some of the biggest influences in his life were working women.

"I would not be standing before you as a candidate for President of the United States if it were not for working women," Obama told the crowd.  He said he owed his success to his mother, his grandmother -- who he called "an original Rosie the Riveter" -- and his wife.

But other issues were clearly on his mind as well, like drilling in off-shore areas like George W Bush, John McCain and the Republicans want to do with such conviction.  A position which, by the way, John McCain flip-flopped on after just three weeks. Which has to be some type of record.

Obama spoke in front of a crowd of about three dozen working women, including Lt. Gov. Diane Denish and First Lady of New Mexico Barbara Richardson.  Denish, who supported Hillary Clinton in the primaries and was one of Clinton's most prominent superdelegate supporters in the land of enchantment, introduced Obama to the crowd and media.

"The media is making a lot of talk about angry white women," Denish told the audience of working women. "But they're right about one thing, we are angry. We haven't made any progress in the last eight years."

"We may be angry, but we're really smart too."

I met up with a few other working women before the event -- Barb and Mary Ellen from Democracy for New Mexico and Mary from  A Female New Mexican's Political Opinion.

One of the working women who asked Obama a question asked about healthcare.  She hadn't been to a doctor in ten years, since she was 18.  She worked two jobs, supported her boyfriend while he worked his way through college and raised her boyfriend's baby.

"What are you going to do for me?"

One thing is for sure.  On women's issues, Obama is better than John McCain.  Which is why in today's Rasmussen poll:

As in most states, Obama polls better among women in New Mexico than men. He has an eleven-point lead among women, and just a seven-point lead among men. Those numbers have shown little change since last month.
That 12 percent margin is identical to the margin in Rasmussen's national polling. So nationwide, women are just as likely to vote for Obama as they are in New Mexico.

Sweetie (2.00 / 1)

I think its telling that its Obama or McCain.

Guess women will have to wait another 90 years?

I'm sorry to be so cynical... (2.00 / 1)

Maybe I can learn to like Obama.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how?
I've got an open mind.

I bet you he adopts the healthcare plan for HRC and Elizabeth Edwards in three weeks; I think he's just waiting for the next McCain flip-flop before he flops on healthcare.

I'm not saying that in a bad way either; flopping towards the HRC and Edwards plan would be a good thing in my opinion.

I wish I could help but alas (2.00 / 1)

I feel as you do.  I believe I will be long dead before another woman gets a shot at the presidency. I feel cheated, disrespected and dishonored because of my gender and my age.
I will vote for Obama but I cannot arouse any enthusiasm in myself for him because I believe what happened was unfair.
I do not think Obama is a bad candidate at all. I believe he is a good man for whom I can vote in good conscience.  I just know in my heart who the best candidate really was and truly believe that the glass ceiling keepers of the MSM with the help of young male bloggers would not let it happen.

My decades of working for democrats is ending.....

Re: Sweetie (2.00 / 2)

You're right, because the loss of one woman means no woman will be viable for another 90 years.  That's the only logical thing to take out of the loss of one woman.

Re: Sweetie (none / 0)

If that's the case, then shouldn't one be angry at Mark Penn, and, dareIsay, Hillary?

Oh I know!  But your "argument" seems to be one people are making- and I can't help wondering if mine works too...

Here's all my pics.

The diarist missed including the gem about how Michelle Obama gracefully juggles work and family, and "looks good while doing it, too."

Oh. Puke.

The guy just doesn't get it.

Obama isn't allowed to think his wife looks good.  Obviously.

Re: Obama Reaches Out to Women (none / 0)

Or maybe it's a problem with working mothers looking good? Or working mothers in general? Or Democratic presidential nominees having wives?  I'm completely lost.

Um, look at the expressions on their faces. They don't look enthusiastic, they look like they're being polite.

Re: Obama Reaches Out to Women in Albuquerque (none / 0)

They all seemed a little nervous.  It was a very small room, and there were lots and lots of press; all the local TV, local radio, local papers.  Not to mention national TV and papers.

Hell, I was a little nervous.
