"I would not be standing before you as a candidate for President of the United States if it were not for working women," Obama told the crowd.  He said he owed his success to his mother, his grandmother -- who he called "an original Rosie the Riveter" -- and his wife.  

But other issues were clearly on his mind as well, like drilling in off-shore areas like George W Bush, John McCain and the Republicans want to do with such conviction.  A position which, by the way, John McCain flip-flopped on after just three weeks. Which has to be some type of record.

Obama spoke in front of a crowd of about three dozen working women, including Lt. Gov. Diane Denish and First Lady of New Mexico Barbara Richardson.  Denish, who supported Hillary Clinton in the primaries and was one of Clinton's most prominent superdelegate supporters in the land of enchantment, introduced Obama to the crowd and media.

"The media is making a lot of talk about angry white women," Denish told the audience of working women. "But they're right about one thing, we are angry. We haven't made any progress in the last eight years."

"We may be angry, but we're really smart too."

I met up with a few other working women before the event -- Barb and Mary Ellen from Democracy for New Mexico and Mary from  A Female New Mexican's Political Opinion.  

One of the working women who asked Obama a question asked about healthcare.  She hadn't been to a doctor in ten years, since she was 18.  She worked two jobs, supported her boyfriend while he worked his way through college and raised her boyfriend's baby.

"What are you going to do for me?"

One thing is for sure.  On women's issues, Obama is better than John McCain.  Which is why in today's Rasmussen poll:

As in most states, Obama polls better among women in New Mexico than men. He has an eleven-point lead among women, and just a seven-point lead among men. Those numbers have shown little change since last month.

That 12 percent margin is identical to the margin in Rasmussen's national polling. So nationwide, women are just as likely to vote for Obama as they are in New Mexico.
